In Brief

“Viva la libertà!”– or “Long live freedom!” – is a line from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and it is also the central theme of the conceptual framework behind the opera exam titled FLUIDITY. The production weaves the three Da Ponte operas into a single obscene, libertine narrative, while also reflecting on the problems of our time. The creators draw inspiration from Lorenzo Da Ponte’s scandalous life – he was brought to trial as a monk on charges of lewdness and subsequently banished from Venice – as well as from the radical philosophy of the Marquis de Sade: the themes of sinful desire and moral boundaries remain relevant today. The texts of the recitatives evoke the style of Sade’s novels, while the scenes reflect the lifestyle of today’s elite, with the music occasionally interrupted by improvised scenes performed by the audience. The performance also includes moments that may disturb the peace and good taste; we recommend it for adult audiences only.
