GOLDEN AGE: AMERICAN BEAUTY
18 May 2025, 7 p.m.
In Brief
Symphonic concert
An unmissable symphonic concert of the Anglophone Season showcases the short musical history of the United States. The programme features shorter works to provide a broader horizon. Samuel Barber's two meditative works bring the intellectual plane of American music closer, one of which, Dover Beach does this through the verse of an English poet. Charles Ives is one of the pioneers of modern and intimate American music, and so is Philip Glass, with his repetitive, minimalist style. The second half of the evening is dedicated to glittering and theatrical America: the way jazz travelled from clubs via Broadway to Hollywood. The conductor, Paul Connelly is also from the USA, who has a long-standing friendship with the ballet company and orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera, and under his direction, an authentic American performance can be enjoyed.
