International opera star Plácido Domingo spent time in Budapest in July. His stay in the capital gave him the opportunity to see the Opera House, which is currently under restoration and modernization. His visit also served the purpose to sign his contract with the Hungarian State Opera for the 2021/22 season.
During his visit to the Opera House, Domingo expressed his admiration for the historic building to be renewed, and he also voiced his hope to return to work at this wonderful venue. As a result of his signing the contract for the 2021/22 season, he is to conduct the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus at the opening gala on 12 Marc 2022. Subsequently, he is to perform the title role of Simon Boccangera by Verdi twice in April, which will be his first appearance in an operatic role at the stage of the Opera House also known as Ybl Palace.
The popular opera singer and conductor has had a close relationship with the Opera and the Hungarian public that reaches back decade. His art has been enjoyed by generations in Hungary since his first appearances at the Erkel Theatre in 1973 and 1987. Although the audience of the Shakespeare Gala in 2016 also saw him on stage and in the orchestra pit, it will be more than three decades since the last time he participated in a full opera production at the Hungarian State Opera.
