Renowned coloratura soprano Edita Gruberova has passed away at the age of 74. The opera singer with Hungarian roots on her mother's side was a popular artist among Hungarian audiences.
The career of the coloratura soprano began at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1969 where she made her debut as the Queen of the Night in Der Zauberflöte. In the 1970s she conquered the most important stages all over the world in such emblematic roles as Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Marie (La fille du régiment), Gilda (Rigoletto), Violetta (La Traviata), Oscar (Un ballo in maschera), Tebaldo (Don Carlos), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Elisabeth I (Roberto Devereux). Her voice is preserved on numerous recordings featuring the greatest fellow-artists and conductors.
She made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera in 2014 in one of her iconic roles, Lucia di Lammermoor. Later, in 2017, she joined the Opera for their tour in Japan with the same role. She bid farewell to Lucia in 2019 at the Erkel Theatre in Budapest to endless standing ovations from the audiences before she said goodbye to the opera stage for good.
She will remain in our hearts forever.
